Chronic diseases like diabetes are caused when the body fails to produce or use insulin
properly. Insulin is used by the body cells to absorb the glucose from the blood and if the insulin is not properly used, it results in excessive glucose in the blood stream, damaging eyes, heart and many other vital organs in the long run. Hence it is essential to prevent diabetes by being aware of the symptoms.
As the numbers of diabetes cases are increasing across the globe, many health departments have initiated social awareness campaigns and steps that can be followed to prevent diabetes or delay the onset of diabetes.
Prevent Diabetes Through Early Detection And Healthier Lifestyle
A well known phrase states that prevention is better than cure, hence sooner the symptoms are recognized, easier it becomes to control the on-set of diabetes and its related complications. During the early stages of diabetes, generally the patient awareness level is low however with early detection, many complications can be easily avoided.
Having a controlled and healthier lifestyle is another way to prevent diabetes or to improve pre-diabetic conditions. There are certain methods that can be easily adopted in the daily lives to prevent diabetes.
Eat small meals through out the day, but ensure that the meals are well-balanced and have low sugar content. Avoid carbonated drinks and certain fruit juices as they contain high sugar levels. Drink plenty of water and other alternative drinks with low sugar.
Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day, and many people tend to avoid this meal due to their busy lifestyle. Breakfast provides the initial intake of sugar to improve the metabolism of your body.
Salads are the best way to keep the calories intake low, are very rich in essential nutrients and it takes our body lesser time to breakdown the salad items into simple compounds for better digestion. This also helps in stabilizing blood sugar levels which is a very important route to prevent diabetes and to maintain optimum body weight.
Our brain takes 20 minutes to realize that stomach is full, hence give optimum time to digest the food. Failure to do so results in overeating. Being overweight is one of the causes of diabetes. Hence keep the food portions small and have regular meals, rather than trying to hog the full day. It has been seen that eating in front of the television results in overeating, hence try to have your main meals with the family without any distraction to keep the food in control.
In addition to right diet, exercise is the next most important step to prevent diabetes and this has to be incorporated in your daily life. The work out can be in any form, while dusting, cleaning or performing any other household work, just enjoy and try to stretch the body for a perfect workout.
We can also adopt other forms of physical exercise by taking daily walk, walking the dog, or parking the car far from the work place. We can keep workout machine such as tread mill or stepper in front of the television to keep the body in shape. Using cordless phones and going for shopping are some of the other means to move the body and prevent diabetes.
Some of these activities and food habits take time to show good results. But basic aim is to prevent diabetes at the early stages. Taking the simple diabetes test available at different healthcare centers is the first step to diagnose the condition. Spreading awareness is the best cure to any disease and to prevent diabetes we have to inculcate healthier lifestyle from a younger age. So tell the children that they have to exercise on daily basis and avoid junk food. This will lead to a better planet and healthier people.
